There are sometimes two versions of a movie to choose from: the Theatrical Cut and the Director’s Cut. Movies often have different edits between the two which brings up the question: when should I watch each version? Let’s take a look at 6 popular films and when it makes the most sense to watch the Theatrical Cut vs. the Director’s Cut.

Blade Runner

Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner has been given multiple edits over the years, most famously in the 1992 “Director’s Cut.” Scott’s vision was to make a meditative and slow-paced picture and the original was a bit too long for test screenings. The Theatrical Cut, released in 1982, is a stripped down version and it has become the classic cut. If you’re into sci-fi and haven’t seen it yet, this is the one to start with. The Director’s Cut gives us a little more back-story that broadens the world of Blade Runner but for the first-time viewer, it’s not a necessity.

JawsSteven Spielberg’s 1975 classic Jaws was a huge hit in its original form but after it was rereleased in the early 2000s, the “Extended Edition” was added and a Director’s Cut was released in 2004. The Extended Edition adds roughly five minutes of extra footage while the Director’s Cut adds ten more minutes. However, the extended versions have little to no impact on the story and character development. To get the full classic jolt of suspense and terror that Jaws provides, stick with the Theatrical Cut.

Superman - The Movie

The 1978 classic Superman - The Movie was an epic and ambitious film for its time and its original Theatrical Cut is still a marvel. However, the 2000 Special Edition featured almost 24 minutes of added footage. The majority of this added footage doesn’t add any significant value to the narrative but it does let us dive more deeply into the character of Superman and his relationships with those around him. If you’ve seen the Theatrical Cut before, the Director’s Cut gives you much more back-story and depth that’s worth checking out.

Dawn Of The Dead

George A. Romero’s 1978 classic zombie film Dawn Of The Dead has also received several different cuts. The Theatrical Cut was shorter in length than the original uncut version and the 2004 Extended Cut added over 30 minutes of additional footage. Romero’s original vision was severely edited down for its initial release and the Extended Cut brings back much of this vision. Stick with the Extended Cut to get the full back-story and to complete the human v.s. zombie narrative.

King KongPeter Jackson’s 2005 remake of King Kong was released in two different versions. The theatrical version is a near 3 hour spectacle but Jackson also released an extended edition which included an extra 49 minutes of footage. The extra footage allows us to spend more time in Skull Island with Kong and his dinosaur companions which is interesting but doesn’t really add any significant value to the story. If you’re interested in spending more time with the characters, the Extended Cut should do it but if you’re looking for more plot and story, best to stick with the Theatrical Cut.

Lawrence Of Arabia

Sir David Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence Of Arabia was even more ambitious when released and was edited down from its original form. The original cut was over four and a half hours long so the 1972 restoration cut down some of the dialogue a bit in order to make the run time more manageable. However, today’s audience can handle longer run times and the restoration was completed to add as much back as possible. Stick with the restored version to get the full narrative and visual experience.

To recap, there are times when it can make sense to watch the DIRECTOR’S CUT version of a movie versus the THEATRICAL CUT version. But there are other times when you don’t need the extra footage and back-story provided by the Director’s Cut. This decision depends on the movie itself and your own personal preference.
